9 tips to get back in shape after the holidays ........................ 9 consejos para recuperar tu linea tras las fiestas

Hello and happy new year to all of you!! I have already felt the good vibes this 2015 is bringing :) and can see a great year ahead! Hoping the holidays have been great, for all those like me who celebrate the 6 of january too there are still plenty of holidays left hahaha.
We tend to over indulge this time of the year and it is perfectly ok if we know how to balance it and how to get rid of the possible harm we have done to us internally. No need to freak out but year after year our bodies are still ours to take care of as they are the ones we have for as long as we live.
Cakes, sodas, alcohol, little exercise and water.....sounds familiar?! I know what it is like as I too have a sweet tooth and love social life and eating out.
Do not worry if you are a bit out of shape or feeling bloated. I am going to give you 9 tips to incorporate in your days from now on and within a month you will feel as good as new :)

1. Drink water, plenty of it

After the holidays we may feel bloated or unable to properly digest. By eating out we intake a lot ore salt in our food than we are used to, we eat more sweets than normal and drink all sorts of fluids but not as much water as we need. Our bodies get dehydrated and as a result bloat and make us going to the toilet not an easy task.
Try getting back on track if you already used to drink water and if you didn't try these simple steps
2 glasses after waking up - helps activate internal organs
1 glass 30 minutes before each meal - aids digestion
1 glass before taking a shower - helps lower blood pressure
1 glass before bed time - aids in circulation
3 more glasses throughout the day anytime you feel like it - relieves fatigue, satiates, makes your skin glow....

If you feel it is hard to drink plain water spice it up by adding cinnamon and apple to it, some berries, some lemon or oranges and you will immediately love the taste!!

2. Move, walk, run, swim, cycle.....

During the holidays we tend to skip our routines and tend to stay at home or cozy on the sofa. We take cars and cabs from one place to another and barely walk or work out. To those of you who kept it up over the holidays, hats off!!! To those who didn't it is no problem....slowly start with a yoga practice or some swimming and try being active at least 30 minutes a day and gradually step it up until you do an hour a day with one rest day a week. You will feel better as endorphins get released whilst exercising and as you shape up your smile will become wider and your confidence will grow even higher!

3. Pace your meals and reduce back the portions

The amount of food we eat during  holidays tends to be bigger than usual as we are normally out, eating at friends places or restaurants or doing buffets. Our stomachs are a muscle that expands or contracts depending on how much intake there is daily. The bigger it gets the more food it will want in order to feel satiated. Remember it takes 20 minutes to feel full as the chemical signs that tell your brain it is time to stop eating need some time to get that message from your stomach and pass it on. You would want to start pacing your meals again and allowing at lest three hours in between. Try reducing portions by using a smaller plate when eating. Whenever craving comes your way drink water or eat an apple. As the saying goes "If you are hungry and dont want to eat an apple means you are not hungry to begin with" hehe

4. Green up your plate

As we have previously learned greens are crucial in our diets. They provide us with live enzymes, phytonutrients and minerals our bodies love and need in order to function happily. We all know they are not a major holiday food therefore it becomes our duty to bring them back into our lives. Call it your yearly resolution, yourself getting back into own habits or a healthier way to be, whatever you choose go for greens! Try eating a small salad before meals and eventually make a big one for dinner and make it the meal.
Combine different greens or make it a daily green smoothie routine. All the fiber kept in them will kick start your digestion and get rid of your bloating once and for all.

5. Become that chef you always wanted

During the holiday season we all tend to eat out and if eating at home we make those recipes we call the cheating ones. Butter, salt, dairy and sugar become stars of the kitchen and it's ok for a few weeks but the deteriorating health benefits they have on us long term are reason enough for us to not use them after the holidays end.
Go back to home cooking, prepare a weeks meal on saturday and freeze or store them in air tight sealed containers in the fridge. Enjoy your grocery shopping. Get over familiar with the produce section and make your fridge look fresh and colorful full of fruits and veggies.
Change the salt for spices and herbs or lemon and lime
Change the butter for ghee or sesame oil
Slowly get rid of the sugar and swap over to malt syrup, raw honey or stevia
Go back to whole grain
Bake with coconut flour, spelt or quinoa flours.
Get back in the kitchen and become a ratatouille master chef!!!

6. Create a motivational collage or start writing a journal

A part of getting back in shape doesn't always mean physically but also mentally. Our brains empower us and keep us positive minded. We need to feed them success stories, hopes and dreams, goals and plans. A new year can be challenging in good or bad ways depending on life backgrounds and surrounding. It is never too late to make changes in life and the best way to start is by visualizing. You can choose to write a daily journal expressing your feeling and hopes or make a collage showing what you would love to achieve or become. When doing this our brains instantly become empowered and receive a boost of positive energy, when we have many ideas rolling around it's the mix of all of them that make the greatest one.
Never underestimate the power of happiness as it relies only inside of you. Money has no value as an object, people have the value.

7. Chew and slooooooow down

Has it happened these past days that you would eat faster or smaller bites over and over without actually realizing as you were caught up in the best conversation ever? hahaha When we eat larger portions and eat them faster we only make our stomachs bigger exceeding also the time it takes our brain to signal we are full. This leads to indigestion, heart burn or tummy aches. You would want to start slowing down again and properly chewing your food. Seems maybe crazy but counting always helps. Count your chews a minimum of 20 times per mouthfull and even if drinking a smoothie try swirling it around your mouth for a bit.

8. Music all around

As mentioned before, a good mental state is crucial for getting back on track or becoming that healthier person you want to be this year. Music is and has always been and inspiration, a motivation, a therapy,  what brings back memories, feelings and even smells. You would want to make a playlist of the best and most motivating songs upon your favorites and start playing it in the morning when sipping your coffee or taking a shower. Music is fireworks of happiness in your brain and it travels all around you lighting up every inch of yourself.
One of music’s energizing effects comes from its ability to engage the body’s sympathetic nervous system. The activation of this system readies the body for action whenever we face a challenge in our environment. Airways open, the heart rate accelerates, and muscles are primed to move. Auditory signals – abrupt sounds or those that suddenly increase in frequency or volume – trigger alerting responses and increase physiological arousal.

9. Ginger and turmeric your new best friends

Remember from lasts posts what we learned things regarding these two powerful roots. They are and have been for many years healing foods and therefore can help us get rid of accumulated toxins and start a healing post-holiday process.
Add ginger to your meals by chopping up a couple inches of it and stirring it into our soups, sauces and stir-fries.
Drink a cup of warm water with a slice of ginger and some turmeric powder in the mornings or make yourself a warm cup of milk at night with some ginger flakes and cinnamon.
Incorporate turmeric either fresh or in powder form in your soups, it gives a yummy nutty flavor.
You can also add an inch or two of fresh ginger into your juices, you will love the after taste!

Remember ginger is available year round in the produce section of your market and is in a root form. It has a long tradition of being very effective in alleviating symptoms of gastrointestinal distress. In herbal medicine, ginger has been proven to promote the elimination of intestinal gas and to relax and sooth the intestinal tract. Modern scientific research has revealed that ginger possesses numerous therapeutic properties including antioxidant effects, an ability to inhibit the formation of inflammatory compounds, to improve the absorption and assimilation of essential nutrients in the body, to help overcome nausea...and so many more.
Turmeric or curcumin as u might have heard it mention, also comes in a root form from the curcuma and you will find it in the produce section of your supermarket too. If it is fresh be careful not to color your hands yellow!! use gloves when handling it!! Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine looove turmeric and I personally do to...it's benefits are endless. It has a peppery, bitter flavor and bonds magically with all curries. It is a huge anti-inflammatory agent helping people suffering from IBS or rheumatoid arthritis, improves liver function, lowers cholesterol.....inhibits cancer cell growth and metastases.... and so many more.

Let's make this year an amazing and healthy one :)

Pasteles, refrescos, alcohol, poco ejercicio y poca agua ..... ¿suena familiar ?

11 DIY natural goodies for skin, body and mind ..........................11 maravillas caseras para cuerpo, cara y mente

Hello to all!!! I am so excited about this post and to share with you all the amazing benefits of using what mother nature provided us on our bodies and how it improves our skin and relaxes our minds.

Have you ever been to a beauty spa where they gave you a choice of essential oils to smell before commencing the therapy? Have you ever been sick as a kid and had vicks vapor rub thoroughly rubbed on your chest by your grandma or mom? hahahah I know I have.

When we talk about natural products and natural healing properties we talk about herbs, spices, roots and flowers that are full of goodness intended to cure, relax, energize or alleviate certain  common allergies, rashes, colds or simply help us obtain a more glowing and firmer skin.

I will be sharing with you my favorite 11 remedies you can all easily make at home with things you can buy at your grocery store, pharmacy or local vendor.
I hope you enjoy and share with me all the benefits you gained from using them.

Let's get started! :)

1. green tea and honey body scrub

This home made body scrub is great for de-stressing the legs from a tiring day at work, from too many hours of standing still or sitting on a chair. It improves circulation, reduces swelling and helps revitalize the skin with lost minerals as well as acting as a hydration thanks to the properties of the honey.

Your skin will feel soft to the touch, firm and will appear less swallow if it was to begin with.

You will need:
pure green tea powder ( I find it in the grocery store under international products )
organic honey (let's avoid the chemicals shall we?)
some luke warm spring water

Method:
Bring some water to boil and set aside until it becomes luke warm.
In a bowl add 4 tablespoons of green tea powder and 2 table spoons of water and mix properly, you want to get a paste like texture, not too silky.
Add 3 tablespoons of honey and mix well, texture should be a lot smoother than before.
Your scrub is ready!!!
Apply on dry clean skin and massage softly letting as much product penetrate as possible, leave on for 5  minutes whilst gently massaging and rinse thoroughly.

To enhance properties try applying after a steam or hot sauna :)

2. sandalwood oil, rose hip oil and shea butter deep moisturizer for face and body

I love this one!!!! The benefits of all three are just astonishing!! Sandalwood oil has been used in traditional ayurveda medicine for years in massages and soothing therapies involving the calming of skin irritations or even mind relaxation. Rose hip oil is a natural anti inflammatory oil, moisturizer and regenerative and together with the power of raw shea butter which is the highest in hydration, and also restores and regenerates dead skin cells when penetrating deep under our tissues; this combination is set for success.

You can use it as a daily skin moisturizer for rough areas such as elbows, knees, feet and ankles. Also as a cuticle protector and hydrator. I often use it as a face moisturizer when I have a long period of time using makeup or I feel my skin in need of some love. It preferably works better for dry and semi dry skins and if your skin is oily try testing on a small area first and see the reaction. You shouldn't be afraid of pimples as sandalwood oil itself is one of the best anti acne remedies I know of, have used it on my skin and I can gladly say I have not a pimple left but the occasional hormonal pre-period ones hahaha.
Method:
Mix together a scoop of raw organic shea butter with three drops each of sandalwood and rose hip oil. Apply to skin as needed. If you suffer from acne try dabbing a cotton in pure sandalwood oil and apply to your face at night, you will see great results once awakening and with the time it will improve greatly.

3. jojoba oil for skin, hair, fungal infections, acne......

This amazing oil is the closest to the natural sebum produced by our skin. It smells quite neutral and offeres several benefits, it contains almost all of the vitamins and minerals essential for healthy skin and hair: vitamin E, B-complex, copper, zinc, selenium, iodine, and chromium. And it’s even gentle enough to be used on sensitive skin without causing allergic reactions. Jojoba’s also a miracle worker when it comes to a shiny, uncooperative T-zone—it mimics the activity of your body’s natural oils, so your skin won’t overdo it.

It is anti fungal and anti inflammatory too so feel free to use it for those toe fungal infections.
Apply directly to pimples to see them disappear thanks to the power of iodine which fights bacteria.
Use sparingly as a wrinkle reducer and let its powerful antioxidants work.
Apply to dry scalp in few drops and say goodbye to dandruff.
Apply to your dead ends or eyebrow areas and observe rapid hair regrowth.

4. turmeric, ginger and lemon for flu

Have you sometimes tried to get rod of a cold and bought all these pills, powders and remedies at the pharmacy but after a week felt still the same? When our bodies get "the flu" we first need to understand that inside of us there's a little war going on and our body is going to need our cooperation to deal with this matter. It needs for us to rest, take care of ourselves for a couple days and give it all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals possible.

A big part of revitalizing our bodies during a flu and activating our auto-healing mechanisms by strengthening our cells in order to fight the flu is by consuming as much ginger, lemon and turmeric as possible :)
turmeric: the medicinal value of turmeric is due to the compound curcumin. There are three different curcuminoids present in turmeric they are diferuloylmethane, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. Of the three diferuloylmethane is present in higher amounts and is responsible for the color and medicinal value of the herb. Curcumin serves as an anti-inflammatory agent and also possess anti-bacterial and anti-viral action. These properties of turmeric aid in treatment of bacterial and viral infections such as cough and cold. The anti-inflammatory action of curcumin aids in relieving the chest congestion that develops in people suffering with chronic cough. Use of volatile oil extracted from turmeric for cough is also very promising in relieving cough by getting rid of phlegm.
ginger: it has been well researched and many of its traditional uses confirmed. It is well known as a remedy for travel sickness, nausea and indigestion. It is a warming remedy, ideal for boosting the circulation, lowering high blood pressure and keeping the blood thin in higher doses. Ginger is anti-viral and makes a warming cold and flu remedy. Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb and there has been much recent interest in its use for joint problems.
Add the vitamin C of the lemon (88% per 100g of lemon) and cure your cold!!!!!

Method:
With a wet grater, grate turmeric and ginger roots (use gloves for the turmeric as its yellow color will stain your fingers).
Cut lemon in fine slices
Pour all ingredients in a jar and add hot water.
Drink and replenish as needed.

For a stronger approach at first flu symptoms juice a ginger root in  a juicer together with a lemon (including its peel), grind some turmeric and combine all three as it is. Drink as a "shot measure" and follow with plenty of water.

5. tamarind and honey scrub

7. lemon and sugar hand scrub

This gentle hand scrub will infuse your skin with vitamins and natural oils from the lemon and leave your skin smoooooooothe as a baby :) As a flight attendant myself, my colleagues and I would normally use this scrub after a heavy duty in order to bring back some freshness to our hands, serve as antibacterial and re-moisture.

8. banana and honey face mask

If you feel your skin in need of some well deserved moisture and tightness as well  as a little bit of glow, this mask is just what you need.
The vitamins in bananas are known to improve complexion and even smooth wrinkles when applied directly to the skin. Eating bananas is also a great way to beautify as the vitamins C and B6, manganese and water improve your complexion from the inside out.
Adding some honey helps to absorb and retain moisture, hydrating the skin and enhancing your natural glow

Apply mixture on your face, keep for 15-20 minutes and rinse with warm water. Enjoy the glow!!

9. coconut honey cleanser

This remarkable cleanser can be used daily and improves skin beauty, moisture, vitamin enhancement and provides a huge benefit versus commercial cleansers as you do it yourself out of natural ingredients. As we have discussed earlier regarding honey it has powerful moisturizing benefits as well as being a  natural anti-bacterial (great for acne treatment and prevention), good as an anti-aging as it is full of antioxidants and unclogs pores naturally. With regards to the coconut oil the benefits are endless! anti aging, anti bacterial, anti fungal, oil balancer, moisturizer, skin calming properties..... we will discuss its further benefits in my next blog post :)

You will need:

5 Tablespoons organic virgin coconut oil

2 Tablespoons olive oil

2-3 teaspoons water – (boiled)

2 teaspoons organic honey
10 drops avender (relaxing) or lemon (rejuvenating) Essential Oil  (optional)
Put all the ingredients into a small bottle and shake! shake! shake! and remember to shake your cleanser before each time you use it.

10. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is an extract from a plant native to Australia and was used as a topical treatment by the Aboriginal people for centuries.
It has antiseptic and anti fungal properties, can control the symptoms of acne and it also appears to be effective with toenail fungus and possibly athlete's foot.
It is only to be used as a topical treatment and should never be swallowed.
If you are suffering from a cold you can apply few drops of tea tree oil in a bowl of very hot water, place a towel over your head and inhale the var as this will help clear your congestion.
If you are suffering from toenail fungus, get your toes cleaned with a thorough pedicure and apply nothing on your nails. Twice a day for over a month or until signs of fungus have disappeared, apply some drops of tea tree oil to each toe making sure the oil penetrates under the nail and into the skin. If it creates a skin rash or redness make sure you are not allergic to the oil or try soaking your feet in warm water with few drops of oll to weaken the strength and avoid a direct application to the skin.
For acne prevention or treatment you can apply some drops of oil to your daily moisturizer or even use as a toner by mixing together with some rose water and dabbing the mixture on a cotton.
To fight dandruff, dry scalp and even head lice, add some drops to your shampoo and use for about a week to see improvements.

POST EN ESPAÑOL!!!!!!!! :):):)
